Cape Mentelle’s success was the result of a family’s labor of love and one man’s unfaltering belief that Australian wines belonged amongst the greatest in the world. Founder David Hohnen established Cape Mentelle in 1970 with his brothers, Mark and Giles. Situated in one of Australia's most highly regarded winemaking regions, the estate produces exceptional wines, including a Cabernet Sauvignon whose international reputation goes beyond the borders of its island continent.
Winemaking and Terroir

Surrounded by two oceans on three sides, the climate of Margaret River is unlike any other. One of the most remote wine regions, with a rugged coastline bordered by forests dotted with vineyards, it is a world away in style and geography from the other, more warmer wine regions of Australia.

Cape Mentelle nurtures its terroir and takes a hands-on approach in the management of its vineyards by carefully caring for each vine in order to produce the most refined and thought-provoking wines possible.

Aussie winemaker Ben Cane created award-winning wines of different varieties across three continents before returning to his native Australia in 2018. As a Winemaker at Cape Mentelle, he draws inspiration from the great wines he’s encountered abroad, combining winemaking responsibilities with travel to share the winery’s ethos of exploration and its collection of fine wines.
